What brought you to Baltimore?
Kate: I came to Baltimore to work at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the pediatric nutrition department in 2011. Then, I received my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling at Johns Hopkins University. Over the years, I became a part of the local running community and have more recently been working part-time for a Baltimore-area running store, Falls Road Running Store. Dave and I have lived in Remington, Fells Point, and now Canton, with our golden retriever and two cats. Although I grew up in New Jersey, Baltimore has become home. I love exploring local restaurants and farmer’s markets, walking through Patterson Park with our pup, and exploring the city through running. My passions include running, nutrition, and mental health, which is why I decided to become a wellness coach; it allows me to incorporate all three of my passions into one job.

Dave: My relationship with Baltimore truly began in 2009, when I began my freshman year at JHU. Over the following years, I realized that leaving was not an option. After graduation, in 2013, Kate and I moved to Remington, where we called home for a few years. We have since bounced around Fells Point and Canton, where we befriended thousands of city cats. I coach Cross Country and Track at Loyola University and work at the local running store, Falls Road Running Store. I have found a true home and family in Baltimore and its running community. Now, running is a defining part of my life. Throughout both my undergrad and graduate years at JHU, the most important lessons I learned were delivered from the track and on the roads. Ultimately, running has allowed me to experience life in an inclusive, driven, and liberating manner.

What’s your connection to Baltimore?
: I absolutely love going to the farmer’s markets around Baltimore. I am always looking for new ingredients to cook with and ways to experiment with food. From Jones Falls, to Waverly, to Fells Point, and now the new Canton farmer’s market, I love exploring and supporting local businesses and farms. I have also volunteered at Paul’s Place and helped serve food to underprivileged families and got certified to walk the dogs at BARCS who are waiting for their forever home. Volunteering in Baltimore is an amazing way to help build strength in our community.

Dave: I have been running as part of the Falls Road Running group for several years now and have met so many great people as a result. They are such a motivated, positive, and fun group of individuals. The groups sends out weekly emails, providing daily (yes daily!) group meet-ups all over the city; these are primarily runs but also include happy hours! Regardless of experience or fitness level, this group has a place for everyone!

What do you like about Baltimore?
: Along with my connection to the running community, one thing that I absolutely love about Baltimore is that it is walkable. I am constantly on my feet and love to walk or ride my bike whenever possible. Also, being able to drive 20 minutes outside the city and have nothing but country roads, hills, and farms is pretty amazing. To me, Baltimore is the perfect combination of a small city, local businesses, and fresh farm-to-table foods!

Dave: Where to start! Baltimore is such a unique collection of neighborhoods and people but still maintains a strong sense of community. As a Baltimorean, you get the benefits of living in a big city (sporting events, concerts, downtown, amazing restaurants, etc.) with a small town feel. Walking our pup through Patterson Park, grabbing a CD at The Sound Garden, and getting ice cream at Bmore Licks are just a few of my favorite Baltimore activities!
