What brought you to Baltimore?
I grew up in D.C., moved here for a job in advertising, married a Baltimorean and then took an 8-year hiatus in London, but Baltimore kept calling us back. Our roots aren’t so much family anymore, but instead the programs and people we’re involved with in the community. I think Baltimore has a way of attracting people who are genuine and passionate. I’ve been fortunate to meet many of them through the Show Your Soft Side campaign.
For me, Show Your Soft Side is my life, 24/7. It’s not all work; we have a lot of fun too! In 2016, I closed my business down to focus solely on the campaign, and I’ve never been happier or felt more fulfilled with how I spend my time. We’ve become a touchstone for people who want to get involved and, fortunately, there are a lot of good people out there.
What’s your connection to Baltimore?
Years ago, I ran my own small ad agency, and yet felt like I was just going through the motions. At the time, someone said to me ‘you’ve got to find what you’re passionate about,’ and I kept wondering, ‘how do you do that?’ It turned out to be a newspaper article about a dog set on fire by kids that changed my life. I was so incensed that anyone, let alone a child, would torture a defenseless animal, it gave a whole new purpose to my life.
Show Your Soft Side advocates on behalf of animals, as well as the shelters, rescues and angels who are out there on the front lines saving lives. Through Show Your Soft Side, I’ve met so many incredible individuals—some of them have famous names and others just ordinary people—who are working to make Baltimore a kinder, gentler city for its two- and four-legged residents.
Now, it’s like I’ve become the ‘dog and cat’ lady for NFL players! I’m constantly getting texts from players and their wives asking for help adopting a new member of their family. I’ve even gotten messages from players who can’t have a pet, but want to know if there’s somewhere they go for a few hours to play with puppies. It’s like they have my phone number written somewhere with a note that says, “if you want to adopt a pet, contact the ‘dog and cat’ lady.”
What do you like about Baltimore?
I don’t know if it’s something in the water, but this city has a way of getting under your skin. It has a quirky character and ‘realness’ to it that’s unlike any place else in the world. I adore the people here!
New Baltimoreans should definitely check out:
Show Your Soft Side: I think its human nature to want to make a difference. When I see the impact that our Softies, and ordinary people, are making on the lives of animals, it makes it impossible to even contemplate ever walking away.
